Cristiano Ronaldo has announced that he is retiring from international football. In a social media post, the 41-year-old said he would 'hand back the No 7 shirt' after the November international break, according to The Guardian.
Ronaldo has made 234 appearances for Portugal and scored 146 goals, both all-time records. Daily Mail notes that he won the 2016 European Championship and two Nations League titles with the national team.
ESPN reports that the decision follows a fall-out with Portugal coach Jorge Jesus, while The Sun describes it as coming weeks after Ronaldo walked out on the squad following a bust-up. Reports differ on timing: Transfermarkt says he has already retired, while The Guardian says the shirt will be handed back after the break.
At club level Ronaldo is still playing for Al-Nassr, where he has scored 8 goals in 10 appearances this season. FootVal's valuation is €6.3m, against his market value of €10m on Transfermarkt, and his contract runs until June 2027.
