Manchester United have decided to retain Michael Carrick as head coach following a day of crisis talks involving owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, co-owners Joel and Avram Glazer, chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox, according to multiple reports.
The Daily Mail reports that Carrick is staying, while Mundo Deportivo states the board convened an emergency meeting and resolved that he will continue, with his position to be assessed on a match-by-match basis.
The Sun had reported overnight that United's hierarchy was reluctant to sack Carrick without first having a clear succession plan in place, with Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann named among the candidates considered. The Mirror reported that the club's decision-makers were not yet convinced by any of the available replacements.
Carrick arrived at United's Carrington training ground the morning after the crisis talks, where he was pictured by The Sun. The crisis was triggered by a run of poor results, including a 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth that left United just above the Premier League relegation zone.
