Manchester United's leadership is weighing whether to sack head coach Michael Carrick after a 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth left the club just a point above the Premier League relegation zone. According to The Guardian, director of football Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada were in deliberations at the Carrington training ground on Monday.
Carrick arrived at the base at 1.50pm to watch a behind-closed-doors under-21 fixture, The Guardian reported. The defeat extended United's winless run to eight matches in all competitions.
Adding to the turbulence, captain Bruno Fernandes liked a cryptic Instagram post about loyalty and no longer caring less than 24 hours after the match, the Daily Mail reported. Fernandes had not featured against Bournemouth after Carrick dropped him following public criticism of the team's tactics.
Former United captain Gary Neville was scathing about the players' role, accusing them of getting a succession of managers sacked and specifically calling out Fernandes and others. Former Newcastle manager Alan Pardew suggested Carrick should have kept Fernandes in the starting line-up despite the controversy.
FootVal's valuation of Fernandes stands at €25m, below his Transfermarkt market value of €35m, and his contract runs until June 2027. The 32-year-old has managed three goals and one assist in seven league appearances this season, averaging a rating of 6.34.
