Liverpool progressed to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals after defeating Chelsea 6-5 on penalties at Anfield, following a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes. Wesley Fofana missed the decisive spot kick, sending his effort high over the bar into the Kop end.

It was Chelsea's fifth consecutive penalty shootout defeat against Liverpool, a sequence stretching back to the 2007 Champions League semi-final and including the 2019 UEFA Super Cup final and both domestic cup finals of 2022. Emmanuel Emegha was also among those to miss for the visitors, according to The Guardian.

Joe Gomez scored the most notable penalty for Liverpool, according to the Daily Mail, as manager Andoni Iraola got the better of Chelsea counterpart Xabi Alonso — who suffered his third defeat as a manager at Anfield, per ESPN.

Liverpool will face Bournemouth, Iraola's former club, in the quarter-finals. Fofana, 25, has made four appearances for Chelsea this season with an average rating of 5.60, and FootVal's valuation of the centre-back stands at €26m against a Transfermarkt market value of €32m.
