Jackson Martínez ended six years away from professional football by coming off the bench to score a late winner for Deportivo Independiente Medellín against Alianza, according to reports from Marca and Mundo Deportivo. The Colombian striker, now 40 years old, netted in the 87th minute to seal a 2-1 victory.
Martínez had hung up his boots in December 2020 after a career that included spells at FC Porto, where he was a prolific scorer, and Atlético de Madrid, who signed him in 2015. Persistent ankle problems had cut short his time at the highest level.
His return to the pitch for the Medellín-based club came as a surprise to the football world, and his decisive contribution made the occasion all the more remarkable. Mundo Deportivo described his comeback as scoring the winning goal on his very first appearance back.
