Flamengo defeated Atlético-MG 3-2 at the Maracanã in the 32nd round of the Brasileirão, snatching the win with a penalty deep into stoppage time to stay top of the table with 70 points.
The match was a turbulent one: Flamengo fell behind, turned the game around, conceded the equaliser and then secured the winner from the spot in the final moments, according to Brazilian outlets. The result leaves them one point ahead of Palmeiras, managed by Abel Ferreira.
The win came just four days after Flamengo were eliminated from the Copa Libertadores, and midfielder Arrascaeta said the squad felt the pressure to respond. "For us today was a final. It was a very important, decisive match after a semi-final we lost at home," he said after the final whistle.
Coach Leonardo Jardim was measured in his assessment. "The result was minimal, but the merit was great," he said, describing Flamengo as the superior side despite the narrow margin.
