Carrick keeps Fernandes as captain but United crisis deepens ahead of Chelsea clash

An eight-game winless run and public criticism from Fernandes over tactics have left Old Trafford fractured, with the manager's position under scrutiny.

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has reaffirmed that Bruno Fernandes will remain club captain despite dropping the Portuguese midfielder for the match against Bournemouth, as the club approaches a critical fixture against Chelsea amid a deepening internal crisis.

Carrick told BBC Sport there were "no issues" with Fernandes, insisting the 32-year-old was fully committed to the club. "He has been captain and he will be," the manager said. However, CBS Sports reports that the situation at Old Trafford has become fractured following public pushback from Fernandes, who questioned Carrick's tactical decisions after a 4-1 Champions League defeat by Como.

United have now gone eight games without a win, according to CBS Sports, and the discord between the captain and the manager has fuelled concern about the squad's cohesion. Fernandes has made seven appearances this season, scoring three goals and adding one assist; FootVal's valuation of him stands at €25m, against a Transfermarkt market value of €35m, with his contract running until June 2027.

Carrick remains in his post for the Chelsea match, but CBS Sports reports that his position continues to be questioned as the pressure on the club mounts.
