RB Leipzig avoided a humiliating second-round exit from the German Cup, coming from behind to beat third-division Rot-Weiss Essen thanks to a double from substitute Christoph Baumgartner.
Essen had long threatened a cup upset and Leipzig, already reduced to ten men, were trailing when Baumgartner entered the pitch. The 27-year-old Austrian, returning from a lengthy injury absence, settled the tie on his own with two goals to send Leipzig through to the last sixteen.
The result was not straightforward: Leipzig conceded a comical own goal at one point, and the match had earlier been overshadowed by an incident in which unidentified individuals sealed the away end entrance with concrete before kick-off, according to The Athletic.
Baumgartner has now scored in each of his appearances this season, giving Leipzig a timely boost after a run of five consecutive defeats in the Bundesliga. FootVal's valuation of the Austrian stands at €40m, matching his Transfermarkt market value, with his contract running until June 2028.
