Aston Villa have announced plans to initiate legal action against television pundit Jamie Carragher following what the club described as "unacceptable insults about the club and its fans". The statement was published on X and signed by chairman Nassef Sawiris.
The dispute was triggered after Carragher suggested that Unai Emery should consider leaving Villa to take charge of Manchester United, where Michael Carrick is currently manager. According to The Guardian, Carragher also told Villa supporters to "shut the fuck up" after they pushed back on his comments, and said the club would "never be Man United".
Sawiris's statement added, according to Ben Jacobs, that "Aston Villa will not allow anyone to stop our ascension in English and European football."
It is not yet clear on what legal grounds the club intends to proceed or what remedy it is seeking. No response from Carragher has been reported at the time of publication.
