Arsenal were knocked out of the Carabao Cup at the last-16 stage by League Two Fleetwood Town, losing 5-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw, and the club will appeal against the red card shown to 16-year-old Max Dowman, ESPN reports.
Dowman was sent off in the 84th minute — becoming the youngest player dismissed in a League Cup match at 16 years and 300 days, according to The Guardian — leaving Arsenal with ten men for the closing stages. The match had already been interrupted when a drone flew over the ground and forced a stoppage.
Manager Mikel Arteta was visibly frustrated with Dowman as the teenager left the pitch and told him in no uncertain terms of his displeasure, according to The Guardian. Arteta later said his side needed to take control emotionally. Fleetwood's match hero Lynch was so overwhelmed after the final whistle that he lost his voice, telling reporters: "Somehow we beat the champions."
